auckland gems
We usually define a souvenir as an object that reminds us of a certain place, time, or person; a memento to take back home. Every country has their own special gifts or best-known trade that fills the markets and “souvenir shops,” selling to tourists a romanticised picture of a country’s identity. Often such souvenirs provide narrow windows revealing very little about our experiences of the country itself.
Sometimes the best souvenirs are non-tangible, what we wander upon or discover without the guidance of a tour book. Sometimes it’s a horrible experience with a damn good story. Other times the sensory experience is much more profound than what we can visually or verbally describe. And often the only thing we take away from the visual encounter is an audible memory.
These audio tracks were recorded in Auckland and usually unplanned, realised in the moment of encounter. Some tracks are pieces of found audio as were most of the materials that formed the packaging. Others are places perhaps a wandering cow would stumble upon while on a rebellious excursion away from the farm.
